In many categories, a person becomes considered a senior at the age of 55. Even though you may not feel it and you still have the desire to stay young, face it, they are calling you a senior. This can be good and this can be bad.
The bad part is that you are not even old enough to receive social security or any other senior benefits if they can be called that. Another bad thing is that if you don’t have a job and you need one, a lot of people, as much as it’s against the law, will consider you too old by their standards to re-enter the workforce.
Although, that couldn’t be farther from the truth since, in reality, people of this age group tend to be far more reliable and more productive than their far younger counterparts. So, what are some of the things you can do to try and get a job in today’s tough market?
First off, you need to see what kinds of skills are going to be needed in today’s work market. You should review a variety of different jobs and their descriptions and see what is needed in order to acquire one of these jobs.
If you already have a lot of the skills needed but it’s been a while since you’ve used them, you may want to polish up your skills. For instance, take some computer classes and learn about a variety of different software programs and different applications that are now being used in different businesses.
Go to your local community college or even a senior center that might offer these different classes. And one advantage to be a so-called senior, you might be able to take these classes for free.
Go through your old resume and redo it. Get rid of all the old information from previous jobs that show your skills working with software or equipment that simply is no longer used anywhere. No one cares that you use to work on an IBM computer with Windows 3.
Get rid of the old and outdated stuff. You should also put any volunteer work you’ve done on your resume and any life skills, training, or other experience that you have had that enhances the skills that you have.
You must know the laws about age discrimination. You need to understand that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission does not allow any company to discriminate against anyone that is over the age of 40.
If you are physically able and have the skills and background to do a job, they cannot be allowed to refuse to hire you because you don’t meet their “youth mentality”.
Get online and do some research. You need to look for organizations that will help you by giving you job referrals as well as training for seniors. One of your biggest advocates for this would be AARP. You can also get help from your employment office, different job training centers that all help seniors try to find gainful employment.
