Nutritional therapy is one of the key recommendations for people living with diabetes. However, there are contradicting studies about which diet is best. Statistics reveal that one of the key risk factors of type 2 diabetes is being overweight. So, doctors typically recommend that patients eat carbohydrates with a low glycemic index while they significantly reduce fat and overall calories.
However, a new study conducted at Bispebjerg Hospital revealed that cutting carbs and increasing fat and protein is more beneficial than eating low G.I carbs and cutting fats. The diet helps to metabolize fat and reduce liver fat in patients with type 2 diabetes. As a bonus, this diet is also efficient in reducing body fat percentage. However, patients were asked to maintain their weight throughout the study.
According to the researchers, the study was meant to examine the efficiency of the diet without using weight loss as a factor. The study confirmed that even without losing weight, patients of type 2 diabetes can regulate their blood sugar level by eating fewer carbohydrates without reducing their calorie intake. This removes weight loss from the equation.
The researchers concluded that more studies should be conducted to confirm the result. If there are enough studies to suggest that cutting carbs while increasing fat and protein without losing weight can help patients, there will be a reevaluation of the conventional dietary recommendations for patients with type 2 diabetes.
