Planning Senior Activities in the Winter Time

It is always important that seniors are given the opportunity to be able to keep both their bodies and minds active no matter what time of year it might be. Keeping active in one way or another is going to help the senior stay young, at least mentally for a lot longer.

So, even if it’s wintertime and you can’t take the seniors that you work with outside, there are a variety of fun things that you can do indoors to keep everyone happy.

Get a group of the seniors you work with to all sit down for a craft session and bring the winter inside for some fun. Get lots of paper, scissors, and glue and make different kinds of snowflakes to hang up all over the place and even make some snowmen to help make the place cheerier during the cold winter months.

If it’s during the Christmas season consider calling around to your local churches and see if their choirs or youth groups would like to come by to do some caroling for the seniors. When they come invite them to stay and visit and have some hot chocolate and cookies so they can visit with the seniors.

Invite them to stay and help decorate the trees that might be in the facility. This helps the seniors be able to be exposed to younger people and gives them a great opportunity to socialize.

If your local town puts on a light show during the Christmas season consider renting a bus and taking a group of seniors to visit the lights and to take them for a scenic drive, especially if you live in an area where it snows. This will give them the opportunity to experience the beauty of winter without having to really get out in it.

Try to get the seniors interested in some new hobbies like cooking and provide them with some cooking classes. Ask a chef or student to come to visit from a culinary school in your area to conduct the classes. You might also try holding dance classes or even pottery making classes.

Consider buying a Wii or Xbox 360 to add to the main television in the social room and get some virtual sports games like bowling, golfing, etc. so that the seniors can get involved with some fun games as well as the added feature of a little bit of exercise to go along with it.

Startup an indoor walk program. The halls of a hospital or assisted living facility can make for some great walking courses. If you don’t like that idea and want something that might hold more interest, take a group of seniors to the mall where they can do their walks there amongst other people and all the different shops that might make the walk a little more interesting.

Consider getting a yoga class started for your seniors. Yoga is a great way for anyone to exercise and is especially good for seniors because of its low impact. Another thing you could do is take them to a community pool and have them get involved in low impact water aerobics or water jogging. Not only is it good exercising but it is also very relaxing.
